2 seniors shine in MTAP

Two senior students of Aldersgate College landed 7th place in the Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP) Challenge held at Bonfal National High School, Bayombong Nueva Vizcaya last January 12.

Jenelyn Toluan and Shelly Hazel Viernes paired off to contend the participants from 30 schools provincewide and qualified to the finals where only 13 schools were left.
The test for the first screening was oral problem solving composed of three parts: First part was a set of 10 15-second questions worth two points each. Each team should solve mentally. The second part was made up of five 30-second questions worth three points each. The contestants were allowed to use scratch papers for them to solve. They may start answering anytime they wish as the proctor reads the questions twice.
The third part of the test was composed of five one-minute questions worth five points each. Every pair was given a question sheet and they may read and answer it after the signal. Only the top three schools were qualified in the next level of the competition. The tandem placed 7th eventually.
“Even if we were not able to qualify for the next round, we are happy and proud that we’ve come that far to represent our school”, Viernes and Toluan stated

The students were trained by Mrs. Lainely Castañeto, their Mathematics teacher. #
